Birds
April 22nd, 2008Today was the actual, official, Earth Day. Happy Earth Day. How is your earth doing?
I’ve noticed something that might be cause for celebration, or alarm.
Birds. They are around now, where I live. When I moved to my neighborhood twenty years ago, I noticed that there really were not that many birds around, especially compared to Menlo Park, where I lived previously. I chalked it up to the weather (foggy, windy). I also planted a bunch of trees.
Over the last few years, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the local bird population. I was especially surprised by the pair of Coopers Hawks that set up a nest nearby.
The optimist would say that it is the happy result of the improved environment–more trees, fewer toxins.
The pessimist would say that the climate is changing, and the effect for the moment is more hospitable for birds in my neighborhood.
What would you say on Earth Day?
